Here is an opinionated list of Australian boxing’s top ‘8’ for the past year.

Shane Cameron versus Dominic Vea for the Commonwealth Cruiserweight title.
In my opinion, the fight of the year in Australia, with ‘The Mountain Warrior’ knocking Vea out in the 12th round after suffering a broken hand.

Michael Kastdidas fighting (again) two world class opponents in their own ‘backyards’ in Robert Gurrero and Scotland’s Ricky Burns. Although beaten in both over 12 rounds, Kastdidas lost no admirers in typical gutsy contests.

Now separated from his long time trainer and manager Brendon Smith, one can only hope ‘Mick’ doesn’t end up being a punching bag for young Mexican and US up and comers.

Will Tomlinson beating Alan Herrera for the vacant IBO super featherweight title.

Anthony Mundine beating Mexican Rigoberto Alverez in a 12 round points decision.
Like Green, Mundine at last fought a creditable opponent who’s previous fight was a 12 round loss against the unbeaten WBA light middleweight champion Austin Trout. Of note is Mundine has the mandatory challenge against Trout however is looking at rising to middleweight suggesting he has struggled at the 154 pounds, or 69.9 class.

Danny Green clawing back credibility in fighting two world class fighters in Antonio Tarver and Pole Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in two terrific fights. Where next for ‘The Green Machine’?

Vic Darchinyian winning the vacant IBO bantamweight title beating Colombian Yonnhy Perez in Los Angeles.
Darchinyian defended his title once before losing a 12 round unification to Panimanian Anselmo Moreno.

Billy Dib winning the vacant IBF featherweight title in Sydney against Mexican Jorge Lacierva in a 12 rounder. Dib has defended his title once in a first round KO against the previously unbeaten Italian Alberto Servidi.

Daniel Geale winning the IBF middleweight title in Germany.
Geale became the 4th Australian to win a world title challenging overseas, and beating Sebastian Sylvester in May. Geale has since defended his title once in Hobart defeating Nigerian Eromosele Albert
