Adelaide United coach John Kosmina says revenge is futile, but his resurgent team are seeking atonement against Brisbane Roar for their heaviest A-League defeat.
Brisbane crushed Adelaide 7-1 last October and Reds midfielder Fabian Barbiero says the result still rankles ahead of Saturday’s rematch between the clubs.
“In the back of the players’ minds, we’re still quite disappointed about that result,” Barbiero told reporters on Friday.
“This week, we’re quietly confident we can take it to them.
“We’re definitely not a 7-1 side and we have been working quite hard in the last couple of weeks and it’s showing in our results – we can match Brisbane.”
Adelaide have posted two wins and a draw since Kosmina took over as coach, replacing the sacked Rini Coolen.
But Kosmina was having none of a revenge theme for the Hindmarsh Stadium encounter against the Roar.
“It’s finished, it’s done and dusted,” Kosmina said.
“If you start to worry about giving back something that you got six weeks before, or 10 weeks before, or 10 years before, you’re not really focused on the here and now which is the most important job.”
Adelaide’s record loss came amid Brisbane’s 36-game unbeaten streak and, while the Roar haven’t won in their past five matches, Kosmina remained wary of the reigning champions.
“Brisbane are always dangerous,” Kosmina said.
“Even the games they have lost, they have played well enough to win.
“Teams have changed their games to compensate for Brisbane and it has worked.
“But you don’t lose for 36 games in a row and you’re bound to lose – it can’t go on forever.
“I think Brisbane have now learnt to deal with losing, to start with, and also sometimes that drop in form that comes as well.
“They’re a good side – we’re concerned about them.”
Despite reviving Adelaide’s season, Kosmina said he was not lobbying to keep the role beyond the current arrangement – the end of the club’s Asian Champions League campaign.
“I’m quite happy with the way things are. I’m not going to jinx myself,” he said.
“I’m having fun at the moment.
“We’ll deal with that when the situation arises, but it’s way too early to think about that.
“At the moment, I’d like to stay but, in two month’s time, I may not.”
