The first local fight night televised on Foxtel this year is this Friday from the Southport RSL on the Gold Coast.

The main fight is the Australian heavyweight title bout between the Queensland coal miner Colin Wilson and Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne from Perth.

Browne is unbeaten from 10 fights, but is yet to fight anyone of note. Interestingly, his past four opponents have featured the 43-year-old Tongan gospel singer Alipate Liava’a (TKO1) and Clarance Tillman (UD12).

A big man at 6-5, Browne is a late addition to boxing following a brief stint in MMA.

Colin Wilson is a survivor of Australian boxing having first gone professional since moving from New Zealand in 1992. Wins of note for Wilson are Ricky Thornberry (the man who went 12 rounds with world champions Sven Otke and Joe Calzaghe), Jimmy Thunder (the man still credited with the fastest KO in boxing (13 seconds including the count), Alex Lapaui and John Hopate.

A true warrior, Wilson’s record may read 35-28-1 but he has fought the likes of Meehan, Miravic, Bugnar, Kirby, Briggs, Cameron, and the unbeaten Italian Francesco Pianeta.

At 39, Wilson’s best days are behind him, however the three-time Australian heavyweight title holder is a big chance to create history by becoming the first Australian to challenge and win the heavyweight title four times.

On an interesting undercard, the Australian cruiserweight title is up for grabs between the unbeaten Mostyn Niemann of Adelaide and former champion Daniel Ammann from Stockton, NSW.
