Liam Jurrah’s future at the Melbourne Football Club is again a hot topic today as news surfaced of his arrest in Alice Springs in an alleged assault case.

Jurrah has been charged with unlawfully causing serious injury and being armed with an offensive weapon, with his bail set at $3000.

This is the last thing the club needs after a disappointing 2011 which ended with the departure of star recruit Tom Scully to Greater Western Sydney. Jurrah’s involvement with the club over the pre-season has been minimal as he had been granted leave to sort out family issues over in Alice Springs, a place which he has now been ordered to avoid.

Melbourne CEO Cameron Schwab stated the club will stand behind Jurrah. “We will try to assist and support Liam as much as we can during this period [while] understanding we are dealing with incredibly complex, emotional and difficult issues.”

This latest media coverage is not great for the Demons, who have had plenty of experience in the media spotlight. It threatens to derail a season that has yet to begin.

Jurrah’s prowess up forward was a huge factor for the club last season, and although many of their young kids are standing up, the Demons do lack a creative forward who can turn the game in an instant.

The impact of the loss might not seem so dire at the moment, with the club recording an impressive pre-season win over Collingwood. But when it gets into the heart of the season it may start to show inside the Demon’s inexperienced forward line.

Jurrah could act as the perfect foil for new recruit Mitch Clark, who will spend the majority of his time up forward and could create a dynamic forward partnership.

Hopefully Melbourne will put these off-field issues behind them when the season starts, as 2012 had been tipped to be the year when the Demons finally crack the top eight.
