An open letter to Adelaide CEO Steven Trigg

Dear Steven Trigg… The City of Churches is known for being short of good sense when it comes to public image. Think the Southern Expressway, ot store trading hours. But the Adelaide Football Club has hit a new level of craziness.

This week Bernie Vince, the Crows midfielder, has been disciplined over an “incident” in which he stripped to his boxers in a pub on the Yorke Peninsula. He didn’t do this on a whim; it was part of a celebration after his cricket side won their eighth consecutive premiership.

Mr Trigg, in dealing with this issue, the club had already banned Vince from playing in the match on the basis that he could get injured. He could get injured walking down the street, but I don’t see any bans on players going for walks. (Don’t you even think about it).

But to go on about how “silly” he was and how your patience with Vince is “stretched” is an absolute brain snap on your part. You essentially turned a minor laugh into a huge public story that distracts the team from preparing to win the club’s first trophy in nine years.

If your patience is stretched with Vince over something like “Boxergate”, then I would hate to work for you at the Adelaide Football Club. You must have the patience of Kevin Rudd.

What strikes me also is your arrogance during the initial stages of this story.

There was an accusation the Vince had been “rude and obnoxious” at the pub, yet this has proven to be false. Where is the public apology or correction? I didn’t see it, I just heard your holier than thou speech. You sound like the bloke who would spill the beans to the CEO about the shenanigans that happened on a player trip.

In conclusion, do you wonder why no-one wants to come and play for Adelaide Football Club? What this issue has shown is that there is a culture of small-mindedness in the offices at the Crows.

Once a powerhouse, the Crows are now an outhouse in the AFL. You have been caught pants-down on this incident.

Hope you are well.

Regards,

A fan who won’t be giving you any money this year.
