Rugby League's standalone weekend is a mistake

This weekend there will be no rugby league matches played from the NRL Premiership, and I cannot believe such a farce could occur.

Why couldn’t we fit a few games on Saturday, then have a reduced round the week after?

Why would the NRL plan to have no premier rugby league played on the Saturday night? Last time I checked, the NRL was in direct competition with AFL but unfortunately that won’t be the case on Saturday when most will only have one option.

Yes, the Toyota Cup State of Origin match is being played on Saturday night and yes, many will say they wouldn’t watch the AFL in any case, but the fact of the matter is that the NRL has allowed such a thing to occur.

Do those at the NRL seriously believe this State of Origin clash will be compelling viewing?

Hardly anybody knows any of the players, except those who have played in the NRL, and occasionally when I watch a Toyota Cup game, the scores are outrageously high due to poor defence.

I can guarantee it won’t be any different on Saturday. Expect a 40-32 score line with a host of missed chances making the score low for a Toyota Cup game.

An even bigger kick up the backside for rugby league fans is the lack of live coverage this weekend. There are only two serious games on this weekend and both are on delay.

How can a Toyota Cup clash get live coverage, but a highly anticipated Test match cannot?

The worst thing about it is, Channel Nine couldn’t even try and rectify the problem a little by showing City vs Country live.

If Channel Nine continue to make poor scheduling decisions like this, then the NRL and rugby league will continue to suffer.
