It is quite clear Robbie ‘Dingo’ Deans’ efforts as Wallaby coach are not as good as we’d like.

I remember before he was appointed, everyone – from journalists to the average mug punter – was saying how Deans was successful with the Crusaders, and therefore should coach our, err, sorry, Qantas’s Wallabies.

I personally would have preferred Alan Jones again, but it wasn’t to be, and AJ has had sweet revenge getting stuck into Deans every time the Wallabies lose

So, who should be our coach again, and should it be an Aussie? Ewen Mackenzie has met with some success, and I think he warrants consideration.

Alan Jones?

Well, any application by him should be considered, given his track record as the most successful coach we’ve had, but he upsets people politically. That’s rugger politics. How about a Shute Shield coach?

Let me throw a grenade in here. Given the success of the brothers at St Joseph’s in Sydney, the school’s rugby success over the years, and the style they play, could it be possible that a successful school coach could coach the Wallabies? I say the theory is sound. Same game after all. As they say, ‘It ain’t brain surgery’.

I would go for Jones again, supported by a competent second in charge, maybe the school coach. However, I would not be disappointed if the usual suspects thought outside their exclusive circle and approached a schoolmaster to be head coach. Many of the players would relate to the chap immediately.

Incidently, given that some of this debacle must be laid at the feet of the players, why is it that while screaming for a new coach, we don’t start screaming for new selectors? Selectors always seem to escape scrutiny, why is this?

You cannot turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse, and it could be some of these players are doing their best, which is not good enough. This is a problem for those who select the squad as well as the coach.

Nick Farr-Jones was on TV saying with no improvement by season’s end, Deans will do the right thing and fall on his sword.

So who shall be our new coach? New selectors anyone?
