As a casual golf fan of many years now, it is pleasing to see the sexy Spaniard Sergio García climbing back up the world rankings.
For far too long has the Spaniard been in the golfing wilderness, with mediocre results and inconsistent form leaving the former heir apparent to Tiger Woods at an uninspiring plateau.
Recently however, García has soared his way back to number 10 on the latest tour rankings.
The tune has well and truly changed for García, who is now recapturing his absolute best form with some crucial adjustments to his game.
The preference to go without a professional bagman and replace one with a friend has left García smiling, with a more calm and relaxed demeanour appearing in his approach to his golf game. Wayne Richardson, a friend from CBS, now has the golden job.
After capturing the 2012 Wyndham Championship with a clinical 262, García also netted a third placing in the recent Barclays tournament, with many chances to win it.
It is almost safe to say that the man is back, back with a vengeance. The glimpses shown in the 2012 US Masters all came together in these recent tournaments where García was a dominating force.
His swing is looking far more fluid and his infamous ‘grip tense’ is less frequent, he is just keeping it simple and going by pure instinct.
This is refreshing to see from a man who has been mixing it up to find the magic formula. The return to grassroots philosophies has left the Spaniard plotting every shot and yardage involved. He is his once again his own judge.
The relaxed state of mind is pleasant to see – happiness is the key to success they say. He is laughing at interviews, opening up and seems to be enjoying his golf once again.
One of the best feel players in the game is going by that feel and restoring confidence in his natural game.
We can’t forget that it was Sergio García who finished one stroke behind Woods at the 1999 P.G.A. Championship as a 19-year-old. The man has some serious talent.
Ryder Cup time is what brings the best out of García. His cheeky punch to the stomach of Tiger Woods in 1999 is a moment we still talk about.
The 2012 Ryder Cup at the Medinah Country Club will be eagerly awaiting an in-form García who will give it his all. This being his sixth appearance for the Europeans, we can only expect fireworks from the fired up Spaniard.
Will this form last? As a massive fan of the Spaniard, I can only hope so. Consistency is absolutely vital in golf and that is what has let García down in even his best years.
With the duck now broken in terms of a tournament win, there is hope that the Spanish master is back, back to resume his long standing rivalry with Tiger, who is also on the road to recovery.
