Wheelchair racing great Kurt Fearnley has vowed to race on to the 2016 Rio Paralympics and capture the third marathon title that eluded him in London.

The Athens and Beijing champion ploughed every last scrap of energy into the 42.2km race through the streets of London and picked up bronze behind British star David Weir and Switzerland’s Marcel Hug.

In a sprint finish, Weir stormed along The Mall with Fearnley desperately trying to chase him down before fading in the dying metres with Hug edging past him.

“I want another roll around,” Fearnley said.

“I want another circuit.

“I want another four years and I want to see what I can do then.

“I guess I have no real expectations beyond that but for the next four years, I am committed to try and come back here and try to do what I tried to do today.”

The course, which was flat with plenty of turns in it, perfectly suited Weir who added the marathon to his titles in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m in a phenomenal performance.

“What he has done over the last ten days I never thought would be done in our division,” Fearnley said.

Fearnley finished the Paralympics with a 5000m silver and marathon bronze, the leanest return of his four Games.

“Take one athlete out of this meet and the whole thing is a different ball game,” he said.

“I have got my arse kicked plenty of times … I don’t mind sinking another four years in and I don’t care not winning another race for the next four years as long as I go to Rio and come out with the win there.”
