This week saw both Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Jose Aldo bow out of their respecting bouts at the upcoming UFC 153 event in Rio due to injury, with Aldo suffering injuries related to a motorcycle accident he was involved in a week prior.

With another headlining fight cancelled, and a social media campaign to not cancel the event, a main event has been announced overnight with the unlikeliest of competitors – Ultimate Fighter 1 alum Stephan Bonnar vs. UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva – in a Light Heavyweight bout.

This pairing is enough to keep the PPV crowd happy, with Silva previously dismissing any talk of a weight change in the UFC, until a couple of weeks ago where he offered to step in for the injured Dan Henderson against Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 151, which was subsequently cancelled – the first in UFC history.

While people may be dismissing Bonnar as a worthy competitor, with superfights on fans lists such as against Jones, or Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre – remember that Bonnar fights to fight, and will entertain the crowd no matter the competitor.

It is he and fellow Ultimate Fighter alum Forrest Griffin, who are credited with saving the company with their three round war at the show’s finale.

No matter what goes down at Rio, both of these fighters have proven to be not only great ambassadors for the sport, but also looking out for the fans – ensuring that the show does go on.
