Bunnies notch finals win, but must improve to threaten Dogs

It’s a strange feeling to see the South Sydney Rabbits go into an NRL play-off game as favourites, and stranger yet to see them win, but they did so comfortably, running out 38-16 winners against a gallant Canberra Raiders outfit.

Earlier in the week the Raiders announced that they were inspired by Papalii’s ‘get Gallen’ performance last week, and their forwards promised to match the Raiders hitman against the Bunnies.

If that was the case then the Raiders’ mission must be marked with a big red F. Their defence was not at finals standard, as the Rabbitohs cut them to pieces for most of the opening 30 minutes.

Adam Reynolds notched up a personal milestone of 200 points in an NRL season, only the second time the mark has been reached in the club’s history. It’s fitting for what has been an amazing rookie season.

The Bunnies weren’t perfect. Canberra was lacking troops, and the Rabbits could have easily hit the 50-point mark had they kept the foot on the accelerator.

They will need to be better against the Bulldogs, much better. The Dogs won’t shy away in defence, and have a consistent attack that has worked well all season.

Canberra should hold their heads high after season 2012. Any year the Green Machine makes the eight seems like a success, but to go this deep into September with the guys they had on the bench is a job well done.

Next week, Melbourne versus Manly, and Canterbury versus South Sydney. Bring it on!
