Today the World Boxing Association made it clear that Daniel Geale is going to be stripped of his hard earned WBA Belt and ‘Super Champion’ status, for avoiding his mandatory fight against WBA regular champ, Gennady Golovkin.

Geale travelled to Germany earlier this year to take on world renowned and long time belt holder Felix Sturm, beating him in a tough split decision battle earning Geale overnight respect across the world on September 1.

It seemed for a moment that Australia would a new golden boy of boxing in Daniel, a respectable and humble father who happens to be an amazing boxer.

However, it is with great frustration that once again we have a fighter who says they want to fight the best but when push comes to punch, they don’t.

The WBA ordered Geale to face Golovkin (now 24-0-0 with 21 knockouts), as a mandatory title defence.

Because of Sturm’s long overdue mandatory obligation to Golovkin, the WBA declared the winner of Sturm/Geale bout must face the winner of Golovkin/Grzegorz Proksa by December 31.

This would have meant an HBO showing for Geale and a blockbuster international fight, at least by Australian standards.

Geale has instead chosen to fight Anthony Mundine on January 2013 in Australia.

“We don’t blame Geale and his team for taking a safer fight, however they knew the obligations they would have prior to the Sturm fight,” said Golovkin’s management.

“Geale is still IBF champion and if he continues to win, this might be a great unification fight in the future.”

Why talk the talk and then clearly not walk the walk? Is not embarrassing?
