This Saturday, the UFC takes to our local shores with UFC on FX: Sotiropoulos versus Pearson taking place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The main features our very own George Sotiropoulos taking on the UK’s Ross Pearson. The card will also feature the finale of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes.

While the main card is stacked, the underlying gem here just might be the main card opener: Hector Lombard versus Rousimar Palhares

In this writer’s opinion, this fight is guaranteed fireworks.

Lombard is a high-level judoka and an eight-year veteran with heavy hands who always looks to finish. Palhares is a highly-skilled Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt and his heel hook would make Achilles himself cringe.

Both fighters are stocky and muscular at 5’8” and both possess tremendous physical strength.

Lombard has a decisive advantage standing up. His judo background and penchant for big throws are also a plus. On the ground, Palhares has been touted as one of the world’s best.

His array of submissions goes beyond the heel hook and he is dangerous in any position.

The intangible factor here is the question of which version of Palhares shows up: the naturally-gifted grappler with dangerous submissions or the bizarre individual who stopped fighting and started celebrating against Dan Miller at UFC 134 before the referee even stopped the fight?

Prediction: Lombard TKO round two
