Does taking drugs show commitment?

With all the power of a cyclone, the issue of performance-enhancing drugs has descended on Australia. Not just on our sporting competitions but on our culture itself. What makes us Australian is under siege.

Performance-enhancing drugs are nothing new. We all know they are there and we all hope they don’t exist in our chosen sport, but only the naïve believed this, even before the events of the last week.

A personal trainer recently put a unique point of view on the issue of PEDs – one I will state from the outset I do not agree with. However, playing devil’s advocate may encourage discussion, so here goes.

This personal trainer stated that if an athlete chooses to take PEDs, they are actually showing a commitment to achieving the best possible performance, and this should be admired.

They are showing the win-at-all-costs attitude all athletes should aspire to. The ultimate commitment to their chosen sport.

His argument is that the athletes who get the most out of themselves are the ones to be admired, whether that is achieved through drugs, hard work, or most likely a combination of the two.

I for one do not agree. Taking short cuts in any aspect of life should not earn respect or admiration. And using PEDs is taking more than a short cut.

What do you think, Roarers?
