GWS Giants mentor Kevin Sheedy will be looking to hand an early season lesson out to his former captain James Hird when they host Essendon in Canberra. We’ll have live scores from 6.10pm AEDT.

They were expected to continue playing their role as the competition’s cannon fodder, but early signs of GWS Giants in 2013 seem to indicate they might be getting closer to their older, more experienced rivals.

A narrow two-point loss to Carlton was followed by a four-goal win over big brothers Sydney Swans in the opening round, and only a Sam Michael goal in the dying seconds deprived the Giants a win over Brisbane last weekend.

Tonight they travel south to their ‘second home’, the picturesque Manuka Oval in Canberra, in what will be their final official competitive hitout before they host the Swans in three weeks’ time to open the season proper.

Like his opposite number, James Hird will not be displeased with his side’s form after what has been a trying month off the field for the Windy Hill club following the news of the ASADA investigation last month.

Essendon were the better side for most of last weekend’s clash with Richmond but faded late to lose by eight points, and a similiar tale to the opening round when they were pipped by two points against Collingwood.

Like every single other NAB Cup game, the lack of four points on offer means this one is nothing more than an opportunity to build match fitness.

Yet for Sheedy’s baby Giants, every single time they step onto the field is a chance to fast-track their development and tonight should be no different.

They’ll run the Bombers close tonight, and could even pinch the win to take into round one. We’ll have live scores from 6.10pm AEDT as part of a Friday night AFL double-header.
