The Cronulla Sharks scandal has officially been blown wide open, with head coach Shane Flanagan suspended.

Peter Sharp, assistant coach and former head coach of the Manly Sea Eagles, will take over.

This shocking development comes in the wake of news yesterday that up to 14 players have been implicated in ASADA’s findings in regards to illegal drug use.

From the moment we witnessed Senator Kate Lundy’s press conference in February, we had been expecting a huge fallout.

The General Manager of Cronulla Darren Mooney and and the head trainer Mark Noakes have also been relieved of duties as the club looks to try and rapidly clean house and move on from what we can now look at as one of the biggest scandals in Australian sports history.

Who knows what is in store for the Shire club going forward? The NRL has assured us that this weekend’s match will go ahead, but beyond that the future looks quite bleak.

In the wake of last night’s announcement, it’s become clear that some key players could be facing lengthy spells on the sidelines if found to have been taking banned substances.

As a Souths fan, I know what it’s like to lose your NRL club. I hope for everyone’s sake that this isn’t the end result of this scandal. My thoughts are with all Sharks fans through this difficult period. You don’t deserve this.

We can only hope the actions taken by the Sharks are more for damage control than anything else.
