The Cronulla Sharks Football Club has been under siege in recent weeks. The drugs in sport investigation has taken a heavy toll on the club even before a single player has been named or charged.

The coach has been stood down, others have been sacked, their president has resigned. Sponsors have deserted the club. The very future viability of the club has been put in the spotlight.

Some have predicted the death of the club, with their argument being that it may make room for an expansion team in an area outside of the saturated Sydney market.

Cronulla fans have fiercely fought for their club and their passion was emulated on the field by the players in their round one win over Gold Coast.

The players are realistic however. Emotion won’t get them through the whole season on the field. Nor will emotion get the club through the season off it.

On Thursday night football on 28th March Ray Warren was discussing the round four game between Cronulla and St. George. He predicted that the Cronulla team would fight like sharks. “Tiger Sharks.”

These two words got me thinking seriously. Would another merger be the best solution?

Cronulla is in serious financial trouble, there is no doubt about that. Wests Tigers are also having financial problems with the Balmain Leagues Club facing difficulty in making its payments to the merged entity.

Perhaps the best solution for all three clubs is another merger.

It would aid the clubs financially and we saw the success that came to the Wests Tigers in 2005.

Another merger would broaden the clubs’ supporter base and would make room for an expansion club to join the competition. And it would keep the Sharks alive.

Did Ray Warren have a brilliant idea? How would you feel about the ‘Wests Tiger Sharks’?
