NRL must come down hard on contact with referees

The Brisbane Broncos expect to climb over the top of the trench and get gunned down within metres, but they don’t care.

The club feels it must take on the NRL judiciary tonight to defend the honour of their captain Sam Thaiday.

In reality, it’s a free hit.

Thaiday was going to get a one-week holiday regardless of whether he decided to stroll into Rugby League Central or not.

Succeed and he’s free to play against the Gold Coast Titans. Fail and the Broncos are no worse off than when they started.

The Broncos hope to prove a point that could help others, if by some miracle, they manage to convince the judiciary panel of the merit of their case.

Thaiday is in hot water after grabbing the shirt of referee Adam Devcich.

He was fuming after being held in a scrum and was a little more frustrated after Billy Slater burst through the hole where the representative forward would’ve otherwise been.

Devcich sent the decision upstairs where the video referee somehow missed Thaiday being held back.

Their stress levels escalated further after referees boss Daniel Anderson admitted the officials got it wrong.

The case might not be of immense importance, but Griffin wants to prove a point.

The coach can’t seem to reconcile why his skipper is almost certain to be banned for a week for pointing out a mistake.

Yes, Thaiday shouldn’t have made contact with Devcich, but Griffin said considering the circumstances a warning letter would’ve sufficed.

That’s the question the judiciary will have to mull over.

Is it reasonable to make minimal contact with a referee if you’re trying to point out a mistake?

Thaiday’s contact with Devcich wasn’t malicious or meant to hurt the whistle blower, but he broke the golden rule of sport. You don’t, under any circumstances, make contact with an official.

It’s hard to see the panel coming down on the side of the Broncos and clearing Thaiday.

If they give him the green light to return to the field they’re saying, in some circumstances, it’s ok to touch a referee.

That has implications at all levels of the game.
