Adam Scott has won the US Masters in a play-off with Angel Cabrera, with Jason Day two shots further away in third.

It’s taken 77 trips to Augusta for an Australian to don the covered green jacket. But after today, it was well worth the wait in a thrilling ding-dong battle between the trio all day.

Prior to today’s win, Adam Scott had two runner-up finishes in majors (’11 Masters, ’12 Open Championship) and a 3rd-place at 2006 PGA.

Day started birdie, eagle to catch the leaders, and shot to a two-stroke lead after birdies at 13, 14, and 15. At that stage it was Day’s tournament to lose.

But successive bogeys at 16 and 17 halted his charge, and it was left to Scott and Cabrera to battle it out.

That both birdied the 18th was a tribute to the way they played under extreme pressure to finish 9 under.

Their tussle deserved a play-off, and that’s exactly what they got.

Both made a bit of a mess of the first play-off hole – the 18th – but both made par.

Cabrera narrowly missed his birdie putt on the 10th. but Scott nailed his, and it was all over.
