More than Mike Tyson, closer to Hannibal Lector. Liverpool’s Luis Suarez has lost his head again and was disgracefully caught biting an opponent in the Reds 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Suarez’s attempted snack on Branislav Ivanovic, which resulted in no on field action by the referee, is one of the worst on-field incidents in memory.

There can be little defence for the Uruguayan. Suarez is a repeatedly dirty player who deserves a massive, massive ban.

His rap sheet is huge – head-butting refs, diving, biting (twice), racial abuse, punching, cheating.

What can you say about a player, an extremely talented one no less, who continues to act like this, like football has no rules or regulations?

Suarez’s original bite came while playing for Ajax a few seasons ago.

What should be the solution for the sport’s serial offender?

You have to wonder what goes through Suarez’s head in these moments. Or perhaps it’s the lack of thinking that is his problem.

The sad thing is that Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers has already played the incident down post-match by saying “The only comment at this stage is that we’ll review it, and… we’ll make a comment after there”.

That is not good enough.

Suarez needs a massive fine by the club and an appropriate punishment. Liverpool’s manager and owners need to condemn Suarez’s behaviour strongly.

And the FA needs to finally grow some balls and take some action.

The striker got an eight-match ban for biting while playing in Holland for Ajax. This needs to be a whole lot more. I’m talking somewhere between a 14 to 30 game ban.

This kind of thing can’t be tolerated. Suarez isn’t getting the message that this despicable behaviour is unacceptable. He keeps doing this stuff.

I know many Liverpool fans will defend Suarez and stand solidly behind their forward. That is their right. Suarez is easily the club’s best player right now.

But Reds fans, wake up and get real. This is indefensible. This kind of incident not only hurts the sport but it hurts your club. Liverpool FC has some proud traditions and these sorts of things only bring shame.

The English FA is regardless as a toothless tiger by many, and when you consider the non-action taken against Sergio Aguerro last weekend for his terrible two-footed stamp on David Luis, we wait with baited breath to see what they do.

For Luis Aberto Suarez Diaz, the part footballer/part vampire who swans around the English Premier League chomping down on opposition players, we can only shake our heads. Just what is wrong with you?

(Editor’s note: Suarez’s performance has also hurt football in Australia, with Ian Ayre, Liverpool’s managing director, cancelling a planned trip to Melbourne Victory to personally handle the fallout.)
