A-League stats: when people are key

Following on from my two-parter on the A-League’s club stats, I thought it was equally important to look at some player records.

First up, the most number of clubs played for. Jeremy Brockie and Justin Passfield are the most travelled players to date, having represented five clubs each.

Matt Thompson (Melbourne Heart) has the most appearances with 203, while the most wins goes to Michael Theo (Brisbane Roar) with 83.

With 41 wins from 71 starts, Oliver Bozanic (Central Coast Mariners) has the highest win ratio at 57.7% for players with more than 50 appearances.

The goal scoring record is well known, but the player least likely to go skidding across the turf in celebration is Adam D’Apuzzo (Western Sydney Wanderers), with no goals in any of his 125 appearances, spread across six seasons.

Possibly the least wanted record is most own goals. This award goes to Rodrigo Vargas (Melbourne Victory) with four.

With 12 goals as a substitute, Sasho Petrovski (Newcastle Jets) is the guy you most want sitting on your bench.

Kevin Muscat (Victory) scored 28 goals in his A-League career, but 25 of those were from the penalty spot, the most by any player.

With 35 goals in 56 matches, Besart Berisha (Roar) has the highest goals-per-match ratio of 62.5% for anyone who has played more than five games.

With 47 bookings, Simon Colosimo (Heart) has done few favours for his team, and his 43 yellows ties with Steve Pantelidis (Perth Glory) and John Hutchinson (CCM).

Kevin Muscat (Victory) gets another mention with the highest red card tally of five

Youssouf Hersi also gets a dishonourable mention, having been booked 12 times in 23 appearances or more than once every two games, the highest ratio for those who have played 20 games or more.

Ricki Herbert was the longest serving manager in the league having been in charge for 159 matches.

Graham Arnold, with an impressive 50 wins from 93 matches at 53.8%, leads the win ratio for those coaches with more than 50 games.

Ernie Merrick has the most wins with 70 from 151 games.

Finally, the referees.

Matthew Breeze has the most games in charge with 118, has awarded the most penalties at 31, and given the most red cards at 33.

Most yellows given goes to Ben Williams with a massive 481.

With an average of 5.3 per game, Kris Griffiths-Jones has given out the most cards per match for referees in charge of more than 10 games.
