Port Adelaide’s 'super sub' spark

Long term injuries may be a blessing in disguise for the Port Adelaide Power. Elevated rookie Kane Mitchell has been electrifying when he has taken off the green vest for the Power in his debut season.

Averaging 10 disposals a game (including his full game in Round 6), Hinkley would be happy with Mitchell’s impact.

When Mitchell came onto the field in Round 8, he hit the ground running. If he is given the sub vest again against the Cats, a few heads will turn.

Kane Mitchell playing in the first quarter for Power may help their poor starts. Many people believe that the young Port Adelaide team looks timid when the game begins and they need a spark.

Kane Mitchell could be that spark for Port Adelaide with his phenomenal endurance and endless running we’ve seen; he could inspire his team mates.

He has certainly lifted the team when he comes on in other matches.

In the first 10 minutes of Port Adelaide’s game against Carlton Port gave up three goals, the same margin they lost by.

Hinkley wasn’t impressed by Mitchell’s only full game “he wasn’t quite as effective for us”, the coach said but he must give him another chance at playing four quarters. It was only one game.

If Hinkley did give him the vest again it is because Mitchell is playing an important super-sub role.

Though there are other options to have a big impact sub for this weekend’s Port Adelaide game against Geelong at AAMI Stadium.

Hamish Hartlett
Many AFL personalities and supporters have to remember that Hartlett has only played 54 games, he may be a born star but he isn’t breaking the heavy tag he is receiving and is clearly frustrated by his recent performances.

Hinkley can use the green vest as a disciplinary move after Hartlett’s actions on Marc Murphy.

Also if Hartlett came on as a sub he could be the game changer. A player of his ability, fresher than anybody else could really lift the Power and a good performance may get his season back on track.

Ollie Wines
Ollie Wines has looked slightly tired in Port’s three straight losses, another player that the AFL community needs to remember that it is only his first season of AFL.

If there are no injuries in the first half, Wines can be given a break of playing four quarters.

A fresh Ollie Wines could break through tired bodies and dominate late in a game, another player who could lift Port Adelaide when injected into the game.

Sam Colquhoun
A small body that has shown great running ability in the 2012 Under 18 Championships and SANFL. An okay debut but there were glimpses of a classy player in the making.

As a young player on his second game, easing him into the match may be a good idea especially for Hinkley to take advantage of his gut run.

Port Adelaide fans will just go by the saying, ‘in Hinkley we trust’ this weekend.

Many will think Mitchell’s consistency as the ‘super sub’ will give him a starting role this Saturday for Port Adelaide Power even though it seems quite clear that Hinkley loves the role he gives to the boy from Claremont.

A question to be asked is, if a sub is so super, why are they a sub?
