Japan 0-0 Socceroos: 2014 World Cup qualifier scoreless at half-time in Saitama

The Socceroos’ 2014 World Cup Qualifier against Japan remains locked at 0-0 at halftime at Japan’s Saitama Stadium.

Japan’s slick passing has been troublesome at times for the Australians, who have required some crucial last-ditch tackles from their centre-half pairing of Lucas Neill and Sasa Ognenovski.

A superb reflex save from Mark Schwarzer denied Shinji Kagawa from close range in the 19th minute, after Japan had broken into the area with a series of short passes.

Australia’s best chance of the half fell to Robbie Kruse after an incisive pass from Brett Holman split the Japanese defence, but an advancing Eiji Kawashima was out early to smother Kruse’s shot.

It followed Australia’s best period of the first half, with both Mark Bresciano and Brett Holman looking threatening on the ball.
