Are the Gold Coast Suns finals bound?

I believe the Suns have a strong chance of making the finals. “Ow, stop hitting me, stop shouting expletives!” Let me explain before you judge.

Gold Coast have four wins from ten games. If you said this to anyone at the start of the year, including Guy McKenna, they would take that with open arms.

Gold Coast have been improving constantly throughout the year and it is showing truly.

They currently sit 13th on the ladder. This may seem a bit far to be pushing for a finals spot.

We need to however check the ladder and how many points those above Gold Coast are on.

North Melbourne are on the same points as the Suns.

Three teams are above the Suns with an extra win, and another three with two wins more then the Suns.

These teams make up sixth – 12th, followed by the Suns.

The Suns can breach this gap quite easily. Not only do these teams beat each other, and have done so, but also a few lose to the lower down teams meaning the Suns can get the jump on them.

The Suns are only two wins behind these teams. They can get these wins with ease. Their draw from here is relatively kind here are some of the teams they play: North Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton, West Coast, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and in the final round, an all important match against the Giants.

Remember, the Suns only have to catch up two wins and by winning some of these matches it is a double bonus for the Suns as they deny the other teams points.

They need to win games of course.

The Geelong game showed the Suns can play good hard footy, lose the stats and yet still be competitive. I have noticed this often during the year, Suns get smashed in stats and can still be competitive.

Imagine what happens if they win them?

Gary Ablett is obviously the architect of such a thing, but players like Jaeger O’Meara (may be injured), Jared Brennan, Harley Bennell, Brandon Matera, Karmichael Hunt and others are standing up for the Suns.

The PS3 controller for the Suns no longer has the description “kick to Ablett”, “mark for Ablett” and so on.

The man has a team to play with and this puts a lot more pressure on other sides now that they need to contain others as well.

The Suns have been seriously competitive this season and are a danger team for a lot of teams. What the Suns need to do in order to make the finals however – may be based on percentage.

This is where they may fall, as they can beat teams but not necessarily dominate.

If McKenna can use the lure of finals to make the Suns have a ‘no mercy’ mindset then they could well up their percentage. This is why the Giants game as the Suns last may be crucial.

This team has the drive and will to success.

This is a big part of winning football – actually wanting to win.

This team is full of young players who would love to belt their song out after a match – winning big allows them to do it with a lot more passion.

This is something Melbourne seems to lack and a few of the other teams performing poorly.

Gold Coast are dangerous, and being led by a man like Gary Ablett one has to see them as dangerous.

Teams that become complacent can be surprised and struggle to turn it around. Anyone who questions this team, is due for a shock. I think they may get into finals, and if they keep playing like they are, there is no reason this cannot happen.
