Here are the three reasons why Australia will put up a good fight in the Ashes.

The first reason is one of Australia’s few strengths. It’s the new faces scattered through the squad which will represent Australia in England.

A lot of the Australian squad has yet to play in an Ashes series. England has not had the chance to face bowlers like Pattinson, Starc, Bird and Lyon. This bowling attack could very likely be the one playing on Wednesday at Trent Bridge. The surprise of a whole new bowling line-up might just catch the English off guard, like New Zealand did.

The second reason is Australia’s successful tour matches. Australia’s batsmen have been piling on runs with Watson and Clarke scoring hundreds and Hughes, Khawaja, Rogers, Haddin and Smith all knocking 50’s.

Although the pitches where flat and the opposition was of low quality, it still helps build confidence. Confidence which is much needed to score runs and take wickets.

The final reason is Darren Lehmann. Ever since ‘Boof’ has taken over as the head of Australia, there has been a perceived happiness around the Australian camp.

There has been a lift in spirits and this usually results in a lift in performances.

‘Boof’ says he was working on the facing the spin bowling. If Australia can improve their play of spin then they will nullify the magical spin of Graeme Swann. Swann is seen to be England’s biggest threat to the Australian line-up.

Australia looks more like a team recently and ‘Boof’ will have them ready for the first Test.

Australia has been written of by many, but have the ability to make a competition out of the series and a hope for the return series.
