Essendon’s deputy chairman Paul Little has taken over the top job after David Evans’ weekend resignation.

Little’s rise to the chairmanship of the AFL club was confirmed at a board meeting on Monday morning.

“I’d like to pay tribute to the leadership and character of David Evans, who has played a significant role in guiding the club through a very difficult time,” Little said in a statement.

“David Evans leaves an enormous legacy on the Essendon Football Club and I know at the appropriate time he will be recognised and acknowledged by the club for his incredible passion, loyalty and service.

“David is not lost to the Essendon family and I know he will be back at the club very soon.”

Evans resigned on Saturday night as the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) prepares to hand down its findings on the club’s supplements saga, with their report expected next week.

Evans’ health is believed to have been a major factor in his decision.

But he also cited perceptions of a conflict, given his friendships with key figures at the AFL and at Essendon.

He also referred to the effect the supplements saga has had on his family and ability to manage his business interests.

Little, who joined the Bombers board in 2011, was managing director of Toll Holdings from 1986 to 2011 and remains a director of that company.

Paul Brasher, who also joined Essendon’s board in 2011, has replaced Little as deputy chairman.
