The third round of the Football League Cup (Capital One Cup) concluded this morning, with five ties taking place. The 16 teams that remain are only three games away from an afternoon at Wembley in early March next year.

The only tie that went to extra time yesterday morning (Australian time) was between Championship side Watford and Norwich.

The Hornets were up 2-0 but Norwich fought back and Gary Hooper sent the tie to extra time, with a goal deep in stoppage time on his starting debut. He eventually scored the winner as the Canaries won 3-2.

A tie close to extra time was played at Upton Park, as West Ham took on Cardiff.

West Ham went up 2-0 within ten minutes but Cardiff fought back to 2-2 before Ricardo Vaz Te scored in the 88th minute for 3-2.

A tie that was never heading for extra time took place at Villa Park, as Tottenham were much better than Aston Villa and completed a 4-0 win.

Sunderland started their post-Paolo di Canio era with a 2-0 win under caretaker Kevin Ball, too good for League One’s Peterborough at the Stadium of Light.

Southampton were two goals better than their League One opponents as Bristol City were swept aside at St Mary’s.

Chelsea also beat their League One opponents, Swindon Town, by another 2-0 scoreline at the County Ground.

The FA Cup final was in the minds of Championship side Wigan’s supporters as they travelled to the Etihad Stadium to play Manchester City.

The result was not what they hoped for, as their defence was breached five times in a 5-0 result.

Another Championship side, Huddersfield Town, travelled to a Premier League opponent and in a scrappy match, Hull triumphed 1-0 at the KC Stadium.

In a Championship and East Midlands derby, Leicester City scored two goals in three minutes late on to secure a 2-1 victory and progress to the third round at the King Power Stadium.

In another all-Championship tie, Burnley were reliant on Danny Ings to score their two goals in a 2-1 triumph over Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor.

In an all-Premier League tie, Fulham went down early but fought back to record a 2-1 win over Everton at Craven Cottage to conclude Wednesday morning’s action.

In Thursday morning’s matches, the only match to head to extra time was the all-Premier League encounter between West Bromwich Albion and Arsenal.

After 120 minutes, the score remained 1-1 and the sides took to spot-kicks to be separated. The penalty shoot-out saw Arsenal triumph 4-3 and progress to the fourth round.

Stoke City triumphed over League One Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park, with Stephen Ireland scoring early before Peter Crouch scored late in stoppage time to secure a 2-0 victory.

Newcastle was too good for Championship side Leeds United, as they scored a goal in each half to win 2-0 at St James’ Park.

David Moyes managed to exact some revenge against Liverpool for their defeat at Anfield a few weeks ago, as Javier Hernandez turned in a corner early in the second half at Old Trafford and the Red Devils held on to record a 1-0 win.

The shock of the morning came with Championship side Birmingham being too good for the fatigued Cup holders Swansea, as they triumphed 3-1 at St Andrew’s Stadium.

The fourth round draw sees Sunderland v Southampton, Leicester City v Fulham, Birmingham City v Stoke City, Manchester United v Norwich City, Burnley v West Ham United, Arsenal v Chelsea, Tottenham v Hull City and Newcastle v Manchester City.
