Shane Smeltz has been one of the premier strikers in the A-League since it was founded in 2004. His statistics are second to none.

He is currently the A-League’s highest ever goal scorer with 73 in just 120 appearances.

Sitting in second position, with a chance to over take this season is Archie Thompson with 69.

And when Smeltz scores, he scores big.

He is also the all-time leader in hat-tricks, with four.

At international level he has scored 23 in just 48 games.

In 2013/2014, Perth Glory are showing signs that they are missing his goal scoring ability.

They have scored one goal so far this season and it has come from the head of Ryo Nagai. While it is early days, they have barely looked like scoring in the first two rounds.

Jamie Maclaren has been bought in by the Glory to provide some much needed assistance.

However the 20-year-old is yet to score this season, but Maclaren is only still young and has time to develop into a class striker.

The Glory versus Jets game lacked class chances. Both teams were missing their main strikers, with Emile Heskey unavailable for the Jets.

This week, the Glory takes on Melbourne Heart. This is a great opportunity for them to open their accounts.

The Heart will be without captain Harry Kewell, however they are a strong chance to beat the Glory.
