The 2013 Rugby League World Cup is clearly demonstrating the potential that the international game has. Especially of note is that all of the teams in the World Cup are representing nations that have domestic leagues.

In other words, like so many other sports, rugby league is being played around the world. And to tap into that world market, internationals need to be given more attention.

So what is holding back that attention? In Australia’s case, the NRL season is simply too long.

Let me qualify that statement– the season is too long to allow for progress.

With 26 rounds, plus three weeks of State of Origin and four weeks of finals, there is simply little to no time left for pre-season tournaments, post-season internationals or any other form of meaningful rugby league.

The protection of suburban football may be great for the memories but it does little to help grow the game.

If you are not aware of it yet, I am a firm believer in the potential of international rugby league. I have yet to see a legitimate argument against it.

Nonetheless, despite the potential it has, the reality is that premiership football is seen as the bread and butter of rugby league in Australia.

In order to tap into the potential of international league, international matches need to be played – hardly a surprising revelation.

Still, without the time to do so, the simple fact of the matter is that they will not be played.

Here is hoping that the powers that be recognise the long-term value of internationals and respond accordingly.
