Adam Scott finds it’s strange that he and Australian teammate Jason Day might not get to play together in this week’s World Cup at Royal Melbourne.
But he wants their names to go down together in history.
The pair are aiming to become just the fifth Australian duo to triumph.
The first were Peter Thomson and Kel Nagle, who claimed the tournament in its second year, in 1954.
Most recently it was Peter Fowler and Wayne Grady in 1989.
This year, the tournament for the first time includes an individual as well as team event and players are not grouped with their teammates.
“It’s a little strange. I must say I was kind of hoping that I’d be spending four days playing with Jase,” Scott said.
“I thought it would be good for both of us.”
Scott will instead play with American Matt Kuchar, who he edged out in the Australian Masters on Sunday, and star Italian youngster Matteo Manassero over the first two days.
They tee off at 11am (AEDT) on Thursday.
Day will play with Irishman Graeme McDowell and Swede Jonas Blixt, starting at 1.08pm.
Each player’s scores over four rounds will be added to those of their teammate to decide which nation wins the cup.
US Masters champion Scott wants that trophy in his collection.
“It’s just one of those things that you want to achieve in golf,” he said.
“The World Cup, it’s a different format this year but still it’s going on the same trophy as Kel and Peter.
“It’s a nice little feather in the cap.
“To say I’d won the World Cup with Jason is going to be something that can be remembered in future years, 40 or 50 years on like we’re talking about Kel or Peter.”
Day echoed that view and said having in-form Scott, fresh from his Australian PGA and Australian Masters wins, as his teammate helped his chances.
“I’ve definitely got a good partner that’s probably going to carry me along the way,” Day said.
