Big win for little Giants

The stage was set. Big brother versus little brother. The Battle of the Bridge.

Lance “Buddy” Franklin was the main attraction in his first appearance for the Sydney Swans, and the Greater Western Sydney Giants had a few sideshow acts in new recruits Heath Shaw, Shane Mumford and Josh Hunt.

Clouds quickly began forming over Spotless Stadium at Homebush. Then came thunder and lightning.

You could tell from the noise of the crowd that something big was about to go down.

The Swans were expected to trounce their cross-city rivals yet again on Saturday afternoon, and held onto the lead for most of the game.

Sydney had past success and experience in their favour. But so did GWS.

The Giants’ new additions arrived with premiership experience and more than five hundred games under their belts collectively.

It became obvious that GWS are a different team from last season. A great deal of young talent propped up with some old heads.

Not once did the Giants give up out on the paddock. They went hammer and tongs the whole game, chasing down every ball, high fiving after each goal, and frustrating the Swans 10-million-dollar man.

And the never-say-die attitude of GWS payed massive dividends for them – a 32-point win against a team they had never beaten, and only their fourth win since joining the competition two years ago.

AFL is in season, and a new rivalry is formed.
