Troubled forward Mitch Clark has been granted personal leave by AFL club Melbourne for health reasons.

“The club will continue to be in regular contact with Mitch throughout this period and is working closely with medical staff regarding his ongoing treatment,” the Demons said in a statement released on Saturday night.

“Some of the challenges Mitch is facing may require some time to overcome, and as a result he will be away from the club for an extended period of time.”

Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said football comes last in such situations.

“Mitch is also overcoming a calf injury, and will continue to rehab and condition his physical injury during this period,” Mahoney said.

“Everyone at the club is behind Mitch and will support him in every way possible.”

The former Brisbane big man was Melbourne’s leading goalkicker with 29 majors in 2012 but played only four matches last season because of foot problems.
