Brisbane NRL coach Anthony Griffin has praised his players for their attitude in turning around the disappointment of their last-round loss to Gold Coast.
Having witnessed the best Brisbane defensive performance of the season in shutting down Newcastle 32-6 at Hunter Stadium, Griffin said his players really lifted at training during the week when victory against the Titans looked all but certain until the end.
“Last week was terribly hard to swallow for the players. They were setting up a really strong win and it turned on its head,” he said.
“To come down to Newcastle and to start again was the best thing for me.”
The Knights dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes but the Broncos withstood every challenge to lead 16-6 at halftime. Brisbane then ran away with the win late in the game.
“We had to withstand about 10 sets more in that first half. To come in 10 in front was probably the ball game there. It was good we could go on with it then.
“Last week I thought we nearly earned a win through our defence and we were a bit unlucky.”
Griffin was also pleased with the performance of fullback Ben Barba who had his best game for his new club including scoring his much talked about anticipated first try in Broncos’ colours. Barba also held up Newcastle’s Adam Cuthbertson and Willie Mason over the tryline.
“He scored his try … so you (the media) will have to find something else to write about now. He saved two or three (tries). He is good … it is a credit to him,” Griffin said.
“(Ben) is his biggest critic and it’s good that he has got that off his chest now.”
