GAME SUMMARY

Atletico through to a first ever Champions League final where eternal rivals Real Madrid await! Atletico superb today, coming from behind against Chelsea en route to a 3-1 victory.

Torres scored the opener for Chelsea and it appeared that the London club would go through given their impressive home record. Atletico though turned it all around by scoring right on half time and from there they outplayed Chelsea in the second half and scored through Costa and Turan.

Superb all round effort from Atletico. Clinical in attack and rock solid in defence. Simeone establishing himself as one of the finest managers on the planet. Atletico certainly are capable of challenging Real in the final. It should be a classic.

The first leg of this Champions League semi-final left no doubts as to how evenly matched Atletico and Chelsea are.

Both employ very similar tactics and styles of play to frustrate and defeat opposition. Both teams are exceptional at shutting down space without the football and both are pretty dangerous on the counter attack.

Ultimately, Atletico and Chelsea cancelled each other out in a first leg stalemate and there is little to suggest that such a stalemate will end tonight.

With the scores still at nil all, Chelsea know that conceding an away goal tonight could very well prove fatal. Atletico are probably the finest team in Europe at the moment when it comes to shutting down an opposition’s offence, as demonstrated by their strong form against Barcelona and Real Madrid this season.

Atletico however, must be careful themselves. If Chelsea score first, then the Spanish outfit will find it extremely difficult to break down a Chelsea defence that was very well organised in the first leg and against Liverpool last week.

Although Petr Cech and John Terry are both out injured tonight, Chelsea remain very well served at the back. David Luiz, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, Ramires and Cesar Azpilicueta form a formidable defensive unit that won’t allow Atletico time to think if Chelsea are defending a lead.

If Atletico score first however, Chelsea are in trouble. Atletico only need a score draw to progress and it remains to be seen if Chelsea can score twice against one of the best organised outfits in Europe.

With both teams very evenly matched, tonight’s contest could very well be decided on penalties. If so, former Socceroo Mark Schwarzer could prove the key in allowing Chelsea to progress to their third Champions League final.

Given Chelsea’s strong record at home though, the London club may eventually find a way to produce a narrow victory over a very stubborn opponent.
