Eagle Selwood to undergo ankle surgery

West Coast midfielder Scott Selwood is almost certain to miss the rest of the AFL season after opting to undergo surgery on his injured ankle.

Selwood had carried the injury since round three, and was hoping to play through the pain before undergoing surgery at the end of the season.

But after exploring all other options, the Eagles decided it was best to address the issue now, with Selwood expected to miss the next 10 to 12 weeks.

For Selwood to play again this year, he’ll need the Eagles to make the finals – an unlikely scenario considering they currently sit two wins adrift of eighth spot.

Selwood said the injury robbed him of strength, agility and speed on the football field.

Fellow midfielder Elliot Yeo will undergo surgery on his broken hand later this week, ruling him out for between five to seven weeks.

But coach Adam Simpson said Luke Shuey (ankle) is ready to return for Sunday’s clash with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

Ruckman Dean Cox should also be available after being rested last week following his heavy workload over the first 11 games of the year.

The Eagles will start favourites against a St Kilda outfit that has slumped to last spot following seven straight defeats.
