An ode to underdog Liam Fulton

There are certain players I believe the entire rugby league community hold a soft spot for.

Nice guys, toilers, workhorses and community stalwarts from the game such as Nathan Hindmarsh, Hazem El Masri and the Morris twins ring in the praises.

In light of his unfortunate forced retirement, I would like to thank and congratulate, on behalf of all rugby league fans, Liam Fulton for a wonderful career.

A renowned funny man, Liam was an honest, fair and hard working player who exhibited the same attributes off the field.

In a similar vein to Beau Ryan, a former teammate of Fulton’s, Liam was never the most talented player. He was never the biggest, strongest, fastest or most skilful, but he has been an invaluable player to the Tigers for the best part of a decade.

Reliable in attack and rock solid in defence, Fulton has always earned the praise of many commentators and fans alike. But unfortunately he rarely received the representative accolades many believe he deserved.

Fulton played 161 games for the Wests Tigers between 2003-2008 and 2010-2014, being selected in the NRL All Stars in 2011 as a fan favourite. He also earned a deserved call up to the City Origin team in both 2011 and 2012.

Former kiwi captain and magic man Benji Marshall once said of Fulton, “I have never played with a second rower who runs a better line”. But sadly Liam has reached the end of his footballing line and the next chapter of his life will begin.

With the vast amount of tributes flowing in for Liam and his family it is a wonderful to see the respect Fulton has generated during his career. It is humbling to know that despite never earning a sky blue jersey or donning the green and gold, Liam has left a legacy of his own. And it is a legacy well deserved.

Here’s to Liam, the honest toiler, a good player and an ever better bloke.
