Darius Boyd is comfortable and in “the right place”, according to Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett, just 24 hours after the Knights star checked himself into a mental health facility to be treated for depression.
Bennett said he spoke to Boyd on Thursday morning and that the 27-year-old Queensland and Australian representative was doing well.
“He was pretty settled and happy with what the process has been in the past 24 hours,” Bennett told reporters at training on Thursday.
“He thanked everybody for their well wishes, but he felt that he’d made a good decision and he was in the right place and he needed to be there right now.”
Bennett gave no time frame for Boyd’s return to the NRL, with reports indicating he may have played his last game for the Knights after three seasons there.
Boyd has been linked to a move to Brisbane after Bennett committed to return to his former club earlier this week for the next three NRL seasons.
In a troubled year for the Knights, Bennett said he was pleased with media coverage of Boyd’s declaration of his battle with mental illness.
“Overall I’m really pleased with the media. I thought yesterday the press conference was really good and sensitive enough to the situation and most of the reporting has been great,” he said.
