Port coach praises Hartlett heroics

From this moment, Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley knew they’d win.

Hinkley watched Port kick 10 of the first 11 goals of Sunday’s AFL elimination final against Richmond.

Then he watched brave Hamish Hartlett somehow survive, and win the ball, after a thumping collision with Richmond’s defensive fury, Steven Morris.

Hartlett’s selfless collect was rewarded with a goal and Hinkley knew Port would be rewarded with a win.

“It was a significant moment,” Hinkley said of Hartlett’s second-term heroics.

“I thought Hamish’s hit on that contest just said to me ‘this team is going to win’.

“We had the game under control. But it just shows you our brutality, I thought, as far as what we were about on the day.

“And that is what finals football demands of you.”

Hinkley couldn’t hide his delight, saying Port’s ruthless streak was the factor most pleasing in the 57-point triumph.

Hinkley also found a surprise finals factor in Jake Neade, at 170cm the league’s smallest player, who snared three goals in an electric performance.

“Jake is a little ripper, isn’t he,” he said of the 20-year-old.

“Just a tiny little fella. I get scared watching him go at some of the contests, I have got to say, but he doesn’t and that is why he’s in our team.

“He plays for keeps, he does light us up a little bit, but he just does his role really well.”
