Liverpool are living in the middle of slump street at the moment with no immediate solution to put an end to their disastrous run of form.

They play host to a West Brom side this weekend who have put an end to their own bad start to the season and are now heading to Anfield on the back of a three game winning streak with their latest win coming by way of a 4-0 trashing of Burnley last Sunday.

Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Tottenham at White Hart Lane just over a month ago seems like a distant memory at the moment. After a host of new signings, things were looking very promising for the Merseysiders and it would appear that the Reds would be poised for another run at the title.

Those title run ambitions have been seriously dented and appear to be very distant at the moment as Brendan Rodgers has to figure out some way to get his team back on track.

Liverpool have lost three out of their last four games including defeats to Aston Villa at home, West Ham away and at Basel in the Champions League, all of whom were much less fancied.

Their latest defeat to Basel (who have also beaten Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham in recent years) was another example of Liverpool losing a game they should have won.

Basel were tenacious and won the game off the back of a scrappy Marco Streller strike but nevertheless, were trashed 5-1 by Real Madrid just two weeks later.

Their one win from their last five, came against Champions League newcomers Ludogorets Razgrad in a 2-1 win at Anfield but even that was unconvincing as they won the game off the back of a 90th minute Steven Gerrard penalty.

It’s not just one problem for Liverpool, it’s many problems.

New signing Mario Balotelli has been wasteful, scoring one goal from 67 shots in his six appearances. Lallana has shown some spark at times but not enough to be a major influence.

Coutinho has been wildly inconsistent and there over-dependence on Raheem Sterling is glaring to say the least.

Liverpool have counter attacking weapons and have enough talented players to create goals but it’s their play on the other side of the ball which has proven to be even more alarming.

Basel’s goal, to no surprise, came by way of a set piece, which Liverpool have defended atrociously in recent weeks and once again failed to make the proper adjustments to defend dead ball plays as they were too slow once again to react to the loose ball.

They are at Anfield this weekend where they are traditionally very tough to beat, but they are coming up against a Baggies side that is enjoying a great run of form.

Baggies’ striker and England U21 starlet Saido Berahino has come into his own this season scoring five goals in eight games as well as three in his last two.

Berahino scored twice in their 4-0 win against Burnley, a win that was West Brom’s biggest in over two and a half years and the first time they recorded back-to-back Premier League wins in over a year.

Despite their recent run of good form, the Baggies are still 7:1 outsiders to pick up all three points on Sunday and probably undeservedly so.

West Brom have won four of there last 10 games including two wins at Anfield. Their 4-1 drubbing at Anfield (which included a Luis Suarez double) last year may still be fresh in the mind of the bookies as any other explanation as to why the Baggies are 7:1 underdogs is simply baffling, especially given Liverpool’s recent woes.

I expect West Brom to get a draw as I am not convinced Liverpool will be able to get it together and make the necessary adjustments in time to turn things around.
