2015 AFL preview: Port Adelaide Power

The Kangaroos are set for another top four finish in 2015, whereas fellow preliminary finalist, Port Adelaide showed that 2013 wasn’t just a flash in the pan.

Last season
Port were the 2013 revelation, coming from potential bottom four to playing some of the most exciting footy that year.

Many wrote them off as being a one-year wonder but they came out last season with a bang taking big scalps early and holding top spot from Round 8 to Round 14.

A late-season stutter, besides a 100-point win over Carlton, seemed to have them limping into the finals but they demolished Richmond in the Elimination Final and accounted for Fremantle at Patersons in the Semi.

The preliminary final against Hawthorn was one of the games of the season, with the Hawks looking well in control from the second quarter.

A late fourth-quarter burst had viewers on the edge of their seats as the Power finished three points shy of a grand final. A player highlight was no doubt Robbie Gray. A prodigious talent cruelled by injury, he exceeded all expectations last season to become one of the most influential players in the AFL.

Next season
The acquisition of Paddy Ryder provides the Power with amazing flexibility. Lobbe is a solid ruckman so Ryder can be used as an x-factor all over the ground. Their forward line looks exciting with the smalls of Chad Wingard, Robbie Gray, and Angus Monfries supporting Jay Schulz, Justin Westhoff, and Ryder. Excellent trading and Hinkley’s ability to get the most out of his players has the Power holding one of the best lists going into 2015.

For me it’s only a matter of time before Port are in the big dance so expect them to finish first to fourth next season.

Who to look out for
Paddy Ryder shared the rucking responsibilities with Bellchambers and Hille at Essendon finding himself at full forward, centre half forward, or centre half back at times. This experience will benefit Port giving them great flexibility to where they place him.

Hinkley will have him set as a centre half forward though who pinch hits in the ruck. While Paddy won’t be expected to dominate games by Port, his influence will be crucial to allowing Westhoff greater freedom and taking defensive pressure off Schulz.

Needs a big year
John Butcher was once nicknamed ‘the future’ by Port Adelaide fans as his introduction to AFL was outstanding. He managed three games last season only kicking the two goals.

With the addition of Ryder to the list, Port no longer has the desperation to find another tall forward. This spells trouble for Butcher who seems to base his game on confidence.
