Vijay caught unawares by century

Murali Vijay was given a pleasant surprise after lashing his 14th boundary on Wednesday – news he had scored a hundred.

Vijay batted nervously at Adelaide Oval last week as he approached triple figures in the second innings, falling to Nathan Lyon on 99.

So the opener took a different approach in Brisbane, where he scored 144 on day one.

Vijay ignored the scoreboard in the 56th over, when he dispatched a full ball from Shane Watson to the rope with a cover drive.

It was only when Ajinkya Rahane spoke to Vijay after the stroke that he worked out why the Gabba crowd was on their feet applauding.

“I was not aware of how much I was batting on. I was looking at the team score and batting,” Vijay said.

“(Rahane) told me that I got a hundred. So that’s when I realised.

“It’s good in a way. I didn’t want to see the score, because I got out for 99 in the last game. It made up for it.

“Today I was not aware of it, I got it. I think that works.”

Four of Vijay’s five Test centuries have come against Australia.

“Maybe I’m playing them more often. I always like to play against Australia … making runs against the best is always going to help your confidence levels.”
