Leigh Matthews’ influence at the Brisbane Lions continues to grow, with the former premiership winning coach appointed as the AFL club’s deputy chairman.

He will also keep his current role as Lions football director.

Brisbane’s three-time premiership winning mentor was voted in at a meeting of the club’s directors last week.

Bob Sharpless was reappointed club chairman.

Matthews has continued to step up his involvement at the club since being elected to the board in October 2013.

Also at last week’s meeting, Andrew Wellington was again chosen as finance committee chair and Sarah Kelly reappointed to lead the marketing committee, which will also feature newly-elected director Ross Thornton.

“Our membership has surged past 20,000, more than 1,000 ahead of the same time last year,” Sharpless said on the Lions website.

Sharpless said fans had embraced the club’s decision to revert to their traditional guernsey, ditching the much maligned “Paddle Pop Lion” design.

“Fans can’t get enough of the new 2015 guernseys, sporting the traditional Lions emblem, with almost 2500 sold after members voted to bring it back this season,” he said.

“Our directors are pleased to be playing their role in the club’s renaissance along with the players, coaches, administration, sponsors and our valued members.”

Brisbane are undefeated in the NAB Challenge and next take on the Suns on the Gold Coast on March 20.

Their AFL round one season opener is against Collingwood at the Gabba on April 4.
