The Blues at least have one win on the board this year compared to the Lions’ naught. Expectations have been too high at Carlton and surely the reality of finishing at the lower end of the ladder has set in by now.
A once-mighty club is in trouble, illustrated by the need to offer two for one tickets to members to entice them to come on Mother’s Day. Back in the ’90s this would be unthinkable.
It’s time for action. The pressure is off after coach Mick Malthouse’s milestone game last week and the home advantage should be enough for the Blues to record a win.
Aiding them is the fact the Lions are imploding too. Discipline seems to be an issue, with coach Justin Leppitsch in a tangle with rookie Zac O’Brien this week over the player showing a lack of respect.
In the preseason the Lions were thought to be knocking on the door of the eight, but a disappointing start to the season sees them vying for the wooden spoon.
One area they do have advantage is in the ruck. Stefan Martin has been good since coming from the Demons and is one who leads by example.
At the selection table the Blues received a boost by the inclusion of Dale Thomas together with the promising Troy Menzel. Out goes Lachie Henderson with a hamstring. For the Lions Matthew Leuenberger is back to offset the injured Brent Staker.
Last time around at Etihad in 2012 the Blues won by 36 points. I don’t see them winning by as much Sunday.
Prediction
The Blues by 21 points. Should win in Melbourne against the Lions, but then again footy is a funny game!
