Wallabies Coach Michael Cheika has confirmed a 22-man preliminary Wallabies train-on squad for the opening round of The Rugby Championship, against South Africa.

Five uncapped players have been selected, including former NRL and AFL player Karmichael Hunt. One notable absence is Melbourne Rebels lock Lopeti Timani, who has missed out.

The squad is preliminary in basis as it does not host players from the NSW Waratahs nor Brumbies as they continue to fight to progress to the Super Rugby Final, with players named from the Melbourne Rebels, Queensland Reds and Western Force.

It also does not include any overseas based players, who weren’t considered for this train-on squad, but will be considered for the full squad.

The selected train-on players will assemble in Brisbane from Monday 22 June and train out of Ballymore, before their first official camp on July 5 in Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Additional players from the Brumbies and NSW Waratahs will be confirmed at the end of their respective Super Rugby seasons.

The preliminary Wallabies train-on squad for The Rugby Championship is as follows:

Scott Higginbotham
