Is it a case of what rock to skip and too many cooks spoiling the broth? The 2015 Ashes will provide selectors with some sticky dilemmas over the next few weeks.

The all-rounder conundrum
When a group of friends go down to a lake to skip some rocks. The person who skips the rock the most times is the one who chooses the best rock to skip, as well as the technique he uses to throw the rock.

Once the rock has been thrown, it does the rest of the work and it is up to it to perform and skip across the water.

This is similar to Australia’s Test cricket all-rounder situation. Who shall be chosen to represent Australia in the Ashes series in England? Mitchell Marsh or Shane Watson?

What rock shall be trusted and chosen to skip across the water? The fresh, young, inexperienced rock or the ageing, inconsistent, experienced, trusted rock, who has been used time over time?

The debate continues as selectors argue both sides. The true testing point will be after the first Ashes Test in Cardiff. If the old rock is chosen for the first Test and does not perform, the new rock may be given his chance to shine on the world stage and Watson will have to be put aside.

Which rock will skip the most times? I guess we will have to find out.

The battle of the bowlers
Australia’s pace attack is a world leading line-up but is it a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth?

Australia may have too many options and not enough room for the likes of Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Pat Cummins, Ryan Harris and Jackson Bird.

Three fast bowling spots will be most likely available if Australia play all-rounders Shane Watson or Mitchell Marsh and spinner Nathan Lyon.

Which three paceman will be selected for the first Ashes Test at Cardiff? Experienced campaigners Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Haris? Young guns James Pattinson and Pat Cummins? In form Josh Hazlewood or outsiders Peter Siddle and Jackson Bird?

All have previously played Test cricket for Australia but who will step up and prove themselves in the captivating tradition of the Ashes?
