Jordan Henderson has been officially confirmed as Liverpool Football Club’s new captain in a statement released on the club’s website.

Henderson takes over the captain’s armband from long time Reds skipper Steven Gerrard after the 35-year-old signed for LA Galaxy in January.

Speaking to the club’s website, Henderson said: “I’m absolutely delighted and proud. It is a great honour and a huge privilege to be named as the captain of this football club.

“When Steven [Gerrard] wasn’t in the team last season, I tried to do the best I could when I stepped in and took the armband. Now I’ll be looking to carry that on and continue to grow as a captain.

“I’ll look to give my best all of the time, put the team firmly first and try to give them – or help them with – whatever they need from me.”

Henderson signed for Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011 in a £16 million move from Wearside to Anfield. After struggling initially on Merseyside, Henderson has made tremendous strides over the last two seasons and has been groomed as the heir apparent to Steven Gerrard in the Reds midfield.

Henderson deputised in the absence of Gerrard at several points throughout last season and was viewed as the natural successor to Gerrard as Liverpool captain.

The club’s decision has been welcomed by manager Brendan Rodgers who claims Henderson to be a complete professional, with the Northern Irishman expecting Henderson to carry the torch after learning first hand under Gerrard for the last couple of seasons.

“Jordan is someone who leads through example – through his actions, attitude and application. He shows total commitment to the game and is a role model professional,” Rodgers told Liverpool’s official website.

“He is also greatly respectful of the great traditions associated with being Liverpool captain and the responsibilities that come with it. He has been blessed to learn first-hand from one of the greatest the club has ever had, in Steven Gerrard.

“Jordan has grown as a person and as a player since arriving at Liverpool and is ready to take up this challenge. He will be his own person, with his own style of leadership and his own ideas and methods.”

Henderson will officially begin his tenure as Liverpool’s new captain when the Reds kick-off their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia, which begins next week with Liverpool’s visit to Bangkok to take on the Thai All Stars on July 14.
