A poem to Hawthorn and Carlton

When you plan a party there’s some folk you should not invite
They’re guaranteed to spoil things and completely ruin your night

If you think I’m joking, just ask the Blues what happened last year
When the Hawks crashed Mick’s 700th and wrecked the party atmosphere.

The action was fast and furious right from the opening minute
Cyril elbowed Tuohy but there was not a great deal in it
Armfield clouted Birchall after hurling him into the fence
In a game that saw plenty of niggle, things got quite intense.

Juddy returned from injury in his first full match of the year
Casboult was outstanding and played the best game of his career
When the Blues drew level twice and then briefly took the lead
For a fleeting moment it looked like they might actually succeed.

Ah, but how good was Sewelly in a vintage midfield show?
And what about Brad Hill showing just how fast he can go?
But just as Carlton got hopeful, the Hawks tightened up the screws
And in a classy display completely outshone the gallant Blues.

As so often happens, the Hawks had more than ten kicking goals
Rough and Cyril led the charge and each fed three between the poles
From deep on the boundary Smithy put a showstopper through
As the Hawks piled on the goals there was nothing Carlton could do.

Last week the Hawks sent a chilling message to the rest of the comp
They didn’t have a “walk in the park” but much more of a ‘romp’
This week expect the party-pooping Hawks to have winning on their minds
They’ll be looking to kick loads of goals and very few behinds.
