Australia has gotten off to their best start since the Lord’s Test overnight, ending day one at 3/287.

With Michael Clarke losing the toss, the Australians were sent into bat, and I’m sure many feared another collapse like Nottingham, given the look of the pitch.

With cloudy skies overhead, the grassy pitch looked like a bowler’s wicket, though Dave Warner and Chris Rogers fought throughout the entire first session, going to lunch at 0/82.

Both openers were looking solid at lunch, Rogers taking the back seat at 27 from 75, and Warner making 53 from 88 balls faced.

Rogers was the first to go, in similar fashion to most Australian batsmen this series, getting caught behind by a fumbling Alastair Cook off a delivery from Adam Wood, out for 43 off 100.

Smith and Warner pushed on, restarting cautiously, and getting to 1/135 at drinks in the middle session.

Warner was the next man to fall in the 46th over, a straightforward outside edge to Chris Lyth in the slips from Moeen Ali, out for 85 from 131.

A guard of honour and a standing ovation from the crowd brought Clarke to the crease, with Clarke and Steve Smith holding out until tea, going into the final session of day one at 2/184.

Clarke failed to make a decent score in the first innings of his last Test, out for 15, being caught behind by Jos Buttler off Ben Stokes.

Voges and Smith pushed forward to 3/255, before rain stopped play in the 71st over.

Smith was looking strong, having put on 71 during his time at the crease, and Adam Voges settled after a shaky start, moving to 27 by the time of the stoppage.

Play resumed for a short while, before the umpires ended the day’s play with two balls left in the 80th over, due to low light.

Voges finished the day having made 47 from 87 deliveries, and Smith on 78 from 132.

Australia will resume tomorrow hoping to salvage something from what has been a difficult and straining tour so far.
