Should the Chicago Bulls stick with the hometown kid that cannot seem to stay healthy? After Rose fractured an orbital bone earlier this week many Bulls fans are asking that question.

Let’s weigh up each side of this discussion.

Rose has missed his 208 games since 2012 as a result of approximately ten different injuries. He has now, on the first day of training camp, sustained his eleventh.

A left orbital fracture that will require surgery is the diagnosis after Rose was struck in the face with an elbow during practise.

It has almost become almost farcical; Rose seems to sustain an injury every time he returns from one.

It has become the case that injuries are so prevalent for Rose that I am starting to pessimistically expect them. What a horrible notion that is. I am not surprised to see Rose get injured again.

Whenever he makes a drive to the basket, I wince. Every time he lands awkwardly or appears to be limping I hold my breath.

This game of basketball has always been a capricious one and we, as its viewers, are subject to its immense highs and lows.

But to watch Rose, a superstar talent, year after year, injury after injury, truly saddens me.

The hometown kid. The hero. The boy who came from nothing and became everything.

That is why Chicago should keep him.

It’s funny how easily people forget. Yes, over the past four years Rose has had a terrible run with injuries. But isn’t it all worth it for the chance to get the former league MVP back?

In 2011, Derrick Rose was named the MVP of the NBA. When healthy, he still shows glints of that player, he still plays the same style of game. All he needs is a bit of fortuitous luck to get some continuity in his game. And Bang. The Derrick Rose could make a triumphant return. All Rose needs is to stay healthy. Once that happens, his form will follow and the MVP calibre player will be back.

The kid from the Chicago’s South Side has given his talent, his body and his soul to the Bulls and in return he deserves belief. Belief that this horrible luck will end. Belief in the individual testament and resolve that he possesses.

Rose is an MVP. That is one thing that will never change. And if there is only a slight chance that he will ever return to his former glory, I believe that slight chance is worth a risk.

If I were the Bulls I would hold on to Rose and give him the chance to blossom one last time. The 26 year-old still has a long career ahead of him and once this bad luck ends, there will be no stopping him.
