The grand final day prelude

It’s grand final day and Hawks fans are pumped,
If all goes to plan West Coast will get thumped,
Three flags in a row; what more could we ask?
We know Clarko’s lads are up to the task.

Fans gather at venues all over the land,
At barbies and pubs, a drink in each hand,
From the Top End to Tassie, they assemble in droves,
Meat pies and saveloys heating on stoves.

The tellies are tuned, the kids have been shushed,
The odds and the stats have all been discussed,
For the fortunate faithful who sit at the ‘G’
Wherever they look is a brown and gold sea.

Out run the boys, through the banner they burst,
As befits the captain, Hodgey comes first,
There’s Roughie and Cyril, Poppy’s there too,
Mitch, Birch and Gibbo and the rest of the crew.

They pause for a moment and remember the year,
All Clarko’s instructions ring in their ear,
They think of the lads who can’t play today,
The ones who’ve contributed each step of the way.

With arms linked together, standing side by side,
Each player is ready and wears his colours with pride,
His loyalty and courage is what’s got him here,
And he’ll fight to the end with no hint of fear.

The anthem’s been sung, the coin has been tossed,
The boys will play hard, no matter the cost,
The siren sounds and there’s a mighty cheer,
Get ready Hawks fans ‘cos match time is here!
